According to the basic data from the Energy Information Administration, the global total, 95 trillion cubic feet of natural gas. The major producers are the United States and the Gulf. The U.S. accounts for one fifth of the production.
Natural gas is produced in the gas and oil fields, which the conventional sources, and cymbal, the non-conventional. Conventional sources have a higher recovery rates for gas than the non-conventional sources. According to the national evaluation of the Oil and Gas fact sheet, 94 percent of the natural gas produced from conventional sources. Gas wells account for two thirds of production, and the rest comes from oil wells.
Natural gas is produced from wells, both in the country and offshore locations, such as the Gulf of Mexico. The production of natural gas is concentrated in the lower 48 states. Texas is the largest producer of gas, and San Juan Basin is the top-producing sector in the U.S.. The number of wells in the U.S. is around 393000, of which 68000 wells are located in Texas and a negligible number of wells in Missouri, Arizona, Nevada and Maryland.
The production of gas has been strengthened by the drilling of new technologies and extraction losses are estimated at 3 percent of production. Production is hampered by weather such as hurricanes, which stop the production in offshore fields and also lead to the possible destruction of transmission pipelines. Hurricane Katrina is one such agency, which disrupted the supply. The price decontrol measures by the Federal Energy Regulation Commission have also to the supply of gas.
The total proven reserves in the United States are about 200 trillion cubic feet, which in its current demand, may last for ten years. In addition, there are unexplored areas such as the fields in Alaska.
